Review:

What is the expectation of a Rajini fan from his 'Thalaivar' superstar's film?

Extraordinary action with punch dialogues which excite the audience, impeccable comedy, a decent romance without any awkward posturing, and finally a right message for the society are the trademark of a standard Rajini film.

Shivaji, the biggest production in the history of Indian cinema, is laced with all the above mentioned ingredients in right proportions and above all the mannerisms and the new look of Rajini with a bald head really rocks the viewers. In fact one is treated to a fair dose of fresh new styles from Rajinikanth; the famous cigarette flick is replaced by a flick of a chewing gum and a one-rupee coin.

But remember beneath all this superstar hype, the movie is directed by Shankar, and he sometimes seems obsessed with exhibiting extreme and impractical ways of fighting a corrupt system in reel life, like he has done with Shivaji. This time he has focussed on black money and the hawala racket, and of course the oft-repeated rags-to-riches storyline, so typical of a Rajinikanth flick.

Rajini's introduction on screen in this film is not as sensational as some of his recent hits, and the highlight of the first half is comedy. It's the first time that Rajinikanth has got together with comedian Vivek on screen and their chemistry has worked well. But it becomes apparent that Vivek has overacted in a few scenes. The makers of Rajini film have not forgotten one thing; the fans coming to see their Thalaivar only. A director must always portray the supestar as a demi- god, and ensure his presence on screen in a major portion of the film That is why the fans start fretting and whistling over Vivek or Shreya portions which sometimes seem to undermine the superstar's presence in the film.

For a Rajini movie watcher, Rajini is all-conquering in reel life. They accept even his ludicrous stunts, such as a somersault, flying in the air, brandishing his shoes to beat up the villains, or lighting up of a cigarette with his gun- without even batting their eyelids.

The pre-interval scenes appear far removed from the main plot, which makes it somewhat boring for the audiences. But the director has more than made up for this lacunae through some well-executed action sequences, and of course the inimitable mannerisms of Rajinikanth regale the audiences.

What is the story?

Shivaji is a US returned NRI who wants to do something for his motherland, but a corrupt system prevalent in the country put many impediments in his quest for the same. Suman, the man in a white costume with a wicked heart tries to kill Shivaji in every possible way. The remaining portion of the film is about how Shivaji overcomes all these hurdles and does good for the people, by flushing out all black money circulating in the economy.

The plot actually begins to unfold only after the intermission, and Shankar treats you to a truly filmy way of fighting black money and a corrupt system, just like he did in his first film Gentleman or Indian, Mudhalvan, and many other films. But there is nothing new in Shankar's script, and once again he seems to follow the beaten track. However, the climax is an extended portion but is interesting, and the action and a brand-new look of the superstar really stuns everyone. Even a non- Rajini fan will enjoy his stylish looks and imposing dialogue delivery.

Review:

The success of a few shoestring budget movies in recent times has rendered the Tamil cinema scene flooding with more such movies, for better or for worse. In the same breadth, Pasupathy m/p Rasakka Palayam deals with the issue of terrorism blended with an equivalent ratio of the inevitable mother sentiment component.Although director Selvabharathy chose to delve into a sensitive subject, no evident efforts to make the movie worthwhile are discernible. The director strays from the subject as soon as he embarks on it and relies mostly on the skin show and slapstick comedy thereby conveniently making his job easier. Adding to the agony are a few slipshod performances. Ranjith loses his father at a tender age and is raised by his mother. His attempts in search of greener pastures bring him to Chennai where he loses his luggage and belongings. A Police Office, played by Vivek, provides him refuge and keeps him as a temp in his police station. In due course, Ranjith helps Vivek in nabbing a notorious terrorist. As fate would have it, Ranjith’s mother falls prey for a grave heart disease.

Only a surgery, which costs Rs. 5 lakhs, could save her. Under these circumstances, Ranjith joins the terror gang only to help himself and his mother with the requisite money. What happens when Ranjith’s conscience sends him on a guilt trip for his deceit to the terror gang forms the rest of the movie.Ranjith tries his best to fit into the shoes of an unfortunate young man. He does his best, however, in the process looks more like a fish out of the water with no cast in the lineup to complement his acting. Sindu Tulani and Megha Nair are used to add zing to the otherwise barren script. Besides, Rani, who plays Ranjith’s mother, puts the viewer through intolerable cruelty, for her expressions aren’t any better than a wooden plank. The director has relied mostly on comedy to pull the movie along and his attempt proves futile, save for the some scenes with Vivek. Coming to think of it, Vivek comes as a saving grace of sorts in the script that fails to treat anything else seriously. The scenes with Ranjith and Ganja Karuppu also promise enough amusement.Deva’s music predictably fades into insignificance. None of the songs evoke any sense of fondness to the viewer towards his music. Thalapathy Dinesh’s stunt choreography is above reproach and Ranjith did not disappoint in that quarter. Sai Suresh’s editing couldn’t save the movie from sagging as it progresses.

On the whole, Pasupathy is an attempt that lacks proper conviction with an inferior script that decelerates the pace of the movie, if not anything else.

Review:
Amidst action packed commercial clichés and masala flicks, the director duo Haricharan and Newton have tried their hands at a 'different cinema'. Though the end product is far from convincing, the fact that they attempt to churn out a realistic cinema needs to be appreciated.

The movie carries a poetic title. Thoovanam depicts the time of the sky before and after a drizzle. According to the director duo, the title syncs well with the cinema. It depicts the real life incidents in all our lives that catch up with us inevitably, a lost friendship, a broken bond or a lasting love that went haywire.

Adhithya and Nethra play the lead roles with ease. They have got into the skin of the character and come out in flying colours. The directors deserve a pat for choosing right artistes for all the characters. Sriman and Bhanuchander leave an impression playing a cameo. The movie is about a nice guy Karthi (Adhitya), who hails from an affluent family. He is an interior designer by profession. He along with his friends leads a happy life in Chennai.

He comes across Anu (Nethra) in Puducherry. She is brought by her NRI father (Bhanuchander), an extrovert. Karthi falls in love with Anu. Dejected at his love rejected by Anu, Karthi decides to take the extreme step. Eventually he is saved by his friends. Anu comes to know of this and resumes her relationship with him. The scene changes and she falls in love with him. But the film doesn't end here. It all boils down to a touchy climax.

Madhu Ambat's camera has caught the locales in Puducherry with all grace. His frames and color tones are breathtaking. Issac Thomas' musical score is soothing to ears.

Thoovanam manages a gentle drizzle though it promises a loads of rain.

Review:
Actor-turned-politician SVe Shekher's Son Ashwin Shekher makes his debut as hero in ‘Vegam’, directed by K R Udayashankar. A suspense thriller, the movie has enough action and sentiment loaded in the right mix. As a caring father, Shekher has chosen to introduce his son in a movie that underplays heroism. The movie begins as a romantic entertainer which snowballs into a suspense drama.

Seemingly inspired by Hollywood hit Cellular, ‘Vegam’ is a perfect launch-pad for Ashwin.

Good in stunt and dance sequences, Ashwin has come out with a bold performance considering his maiden attempt on big screen. Giving able company to Ashwin are Prabhu, Kushboo and Sriman. Archana as heroine is passable. Shekher plays a cameo, who tickles the funny bone in the audience. The movie revolves around Ashwin, who runs an event management company. He comes to Malaysia to meet his lover Archana.

He comes across a telephone call from a woman, (Kushboo) who cries out for help. She is locked up in a place by a gang led by a suspended cop (Sriman). Unable to cut the telephone line, Ashwin sets in search of the woman in a bid to rescue her. How he goes about accomplishing the task forms the rest.

Screenplay by Shekher is racy. Rajesh Vaidhya’s catchy musical score does work out well. Especially the soft melody ‘Kalabha Mayilae’ still lingers in our hearts. Suresh Urs' editing and K S Selvaraj's cinematography have played their part well.On the flip side, the climax is too lengthy and predictable. All said, Ashwin has made a decent beginning and if he could hone his acting skills a bit more, he is sure to give the big guns a run for their money.

Review:

An honest, sincere cop on his new posting taking on the local gangster and teaching him and his cronies the lesson of their lives is a story we have seen innumerable times on the Tamil screen. It is yet again repeated here.

With his penchant for action and fights, it's a role right up the street of Action King Arjun. He has a perfect foil in Lal who plays the dreaded gangster Maasi who wielded immense clout in Nachiapuram. The place has not seen an election since long, as Maasi intimidated or killed rival candidates. The attempt by the new election commissioner (Raghuvaran) to hold an election turns futile. The conflict between the thug and the cop reaches a finale where only one could survive. And no points in guessing who!

Review:

If cricket fans in Chennai are disappointed at the early exit of India from the World Cup, here comes director Venkat Prabhu with Chennai 600028 which revolves around the youth's unbridled passion for the sport. The whole thing is presented in an interesting and chic manner. The director has succeeded simply by marrying the essential joi de vivre of youth and the inherent sense of fun in a game like cricket. When fun and fantasy meet, there is jollity all around. And it is certainly in Chennai-6000028, which is a kind of coming of age film where youths discover about many things including themselves through the game of cricket.

Venkat Prabhu has simply tapped into the youthfulness, energy and exuberance available on our streets. Even though the crux of the film is cricket, it is not in the shades of Iqbal or that other tour de force Lagaan.

The movie is a mix of all drama elements with the characters being the boys living next door wielding willows in every open space under the hot sun. In a nutshell it is the contest between two local teams fighting for honors on the ground in Gully cricket. The director has used the drama of every-day life, which is usually gripping than anything any scriptwriter can think of, and made the story move forward. Quite smartly, he has also used fresh faces, but which fit the roles. It takes guts to think out of the box. But Venkat Prabhu has showed that he has that. And S P B Charan, the producer, deserves praise for giving the director such a free hand. The movie revolves around Sharks, a local cricket team comprising a group of friends who spend their entire day on cricket field. Their ambition is to inflict defeat on their fellow cricket team Rockers. Did they manage to succeed in their ambition forms the crux.

Karthik (Mirchi Siva) leads the Sharks cricket team. Cricket and friends are his priorities. The game binds them together. The game makes them laugh and cry. A sequence of events (romance) leads to a split in the team. Karthik and Arun (Nithin Sathya) cross swords as the former falls in love with latter's sister. But how the friends manage to overcome all odds and stand united to realize their dream makes up the movie.

Mirchi Siva as Karthick is impressive. A radio jockey-turned-actor Shiva has dazzled in the lead role. Proficient in the game of cricket, Shiva has enough opportunity to perform in the movie and the young lad has utilised it well. Vijayalakshmi (director Agathiyan's daughter) plays Shiva's ladylove.

Hogging all the limelight are Jai (Deva's younger son) and Premji Gangai Amaran (Gangai Amaran's son). They fit the roles to a T. The former, who resembles Vijay in several sequences, has performed with ease while the latter has emerged successful in tickling the funny bone. Aravind, Prasanna, Cristine and a host of newcomers have just lived the characters in the movie.

Cricket is one sport which no doubt binds people together cutting across caste, creed and religion. Venkat Prabhu has not gone overboard. Considering this to be his maiden attempt in wielding the megaphone, Venkat Prabhu needs to be appreciated. He has handled all his characters with ease and conviction.

Lending a strong support to the movie are Yuvanshankar's catchy tunes and Sakthi Saravanan's camera. Yuvan's youthful tunes coupled with catchy lyrics by Valee and Gangai Amaran are good. Sakthi Saravanan camera has freshness in it. It has captured the images on a cricket field in an excellent manner.

S P B Charan and J K Saravana deserve a special mention for gathering guts to sponsor such a unique film.

Venkat Prabhu, son of Gangai Amaran, can hold his head high and walk proud for giving a film that is technically glossy and rich in content.

Review:

Unnale Unnale is one of the most cute and cuddly kind of city love stories. They say devil is in the detail. But delight too is. Cinematographer turned director Jeeva, who showed his class in movies like 12B and Ullam Ketkume, puts up a mature mind in handling a three-cornered love story. His strength seems to be getting the backdrop right and making it tells the story along with the events.

Unnale Unnale is packaged with care and oozes a trendy chic feel all through. Jeeva has worked on the backdrop assiduously and makes the story appealing and realistic. In his endeavor, music director Harris Jayaraj has chipped in heartily and adds a unique luster. The main cast of debutant Vinay, Tanisha and Sada are in splendid form and give value to their roles. Sada in particular is full of restrained gusto and delivers a knockout punch of sorts.Jeeva seems to have done pointed research into the world of software yuppies and the things that happen in their unique domain. And since the tapestry is real and cute, the movie unspools without any stutter or struggle. Jeeva maintains this cool hip kind of feel all through (Melbourne with its unique old world feel in a modern setting gives the story an effective backbone), and this consistency is vital to the story’s progress. Jeeva also gets the mix of comedy, romance and emotion just about right. So what you have is a complete product that ranks among the top.

Karthik (Vinay) is your typical software pro. Full of zest and playful energy, he is attracted to the opposite sex with inevitability of iron particles moving towards a magnet. There is nothing malicious or lustful behind his flirt. But it is a spontaneous inner process in him. His love life in Chennai had a jolt-filled end as his lover Jhansi (Sada) had walked out on him.

Jhansi, in a sense, is the mirror opposite of Karthik. If he is outgoing, fun-filled extrovert, she is laconic, inward-looking simple girl. The opposites had attracted each other. But as it happens, she is also repelled out for obvious reasons. Karthik takes the split with typical insouciance while Jhansi goes to Australia for higher studies.

Fate puts Karthik also in Melbourne as he is sent there on an official assignment. The playful Karthik runs into a vivacious Deepika (Tanisha) in his flight. She has the same kind of zeal for life as Karthik has. She understands his mind and tries to help Karthik and Jhansi join hands again. But in a quirk of fate, Deepika too is attracted by the vibrancy of Karthik.Jhansi, in a sense, is the mirror opposite of Karthik. She has the same kind of zeal for life as Karthik has. She understands his mind and tries to help Karthik and Jhansi join hands again. But in a quirk of fate, Deepika too is attracted by the vibrancy of Karthik.

It is a Mills and Boonish situation, but with a touch of acceptability. Caught between his old flame, which can be very difficult to handle, and a new one, who is all about lark and fun, Karthik has to decide on which girl to walk the aisle with. The suspense till the end is maintained with felicitous adroitness. This helps you to sit glued to the seat.

Jeeva’s script works mainly because, he doesn’t push the story. Rather it tells itself organically. The naturalness and plausibility make the story worth following.

Vinay, tall, dark and handsome, suits the character of an impish yuppie to perfection. The queer playfulness that seem affixed to his face comes handy in light-hearted moments. He brings to his character a dew-kissed newness. Though slightly one-dimensional and gawky in dialogue delivery, Vinay, if he makes the right choices, has a good future in the industry. The most inspirational part in the movie is Sada’s performances. Playing a complex, possessive girl, Sada has given the character the much-needed intensity and has tailored her looks to convey the inner seriousness. The flickering of emotions behind the glassed eyes is very effective and convincing. Tanisha, on the other hand, has the same cherubic happiness of her sister Kajol. She is also very energetic.

The three characters understand each other and feed off from others. So what you have a very realistic flow of emotions. Raju Sundaram’s character adds the necessary zaniness to the script.

Harris Jayaraj always reserves the best for Jeeva. Unnale Unnale confirms that. The re-recording is of the highest class and brings alive the emotion of the moment very beautifully. The songs carry with them a veneer of class all through. All the songs are brilliant and get an extra sheen in the way they have been stylishly picturised.

Jeeva, who has done the double role of directing and handling the camera, has not slipped on both the fronts. In fact, one compliments the other. To a movie on love, his work is filled with love and care. How apt!

Unnale Unnale, on the whole, is a cool romantic treat for a hot season.

Review:

Deepika (Bhavana) is a Xerox of her brother Kasi (Prakash Raj), a don with numerous business interests - legal and illegal. Kasi secures admission for her only sister in a Chennai Medical College by killing another girl named Deepika. With her brother behind her, Deepika goes about terrorizing the students, the faculty and even the dean.

Aarya (Madhavan), a final-year medical student, joins the Chennai College after getting transfer from Coimbatore. He lives with his mother and sister. Deepika is unnecessarily hostile to well-behaved and law-abiding Aarya and harasses him.

Notwithstanding her increasing tantrums, Aarya remains calm but gives her a tit for tat. However, Deepika soon gets attracted to Aarya and decides to marry him at any cost with her brother, Kasi's support. Aarya turns down the proposal on the grounds of social status, thereby incurring the wrath of Kasi. The rest of the story is hackneyed one of a nice guy and a baddie fighting it out

It is Prakash Raj, a seasoned actor, who enlivens the whole drama. In what is obviously a contrived performance, Madhavan tries to be a "chocolate boy" turns action hero. The young Bhavana is given a difficult role, a character with negative shades and she proves equal to the challenge. Vadivelu along with Prakash and Madhavan-Bhavana pair provide some hilarious moments.
